She was an actress, known for Otello (1948), Serenade (1956) and Little Shop of Erotica (2001). She was married to Joseph A. Gimma.


She was perhaps the most famous Mimi (in "La Boheme") of the 1940s. She not only sang the role on legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini's 1946 radio broadcast, but also with the Metropolitan Opera.


Her big break came in her native Italy in 1934, when she took over for the indisposed star of "Madama Butterfly" at Milan's Teatro Lirico. She turned that heroine into a signature role, with reportedly more than 300 performances during her career.
