In the summer of 2008 there were moves to force Brown to stand down as Prime Minister following the party's worst-ever local election results, the loss of the Mayoralty of London and several by-election losses to the Conservatives and the Scottish National Party (SNP). In June 2009 there were further moves by Labour backbenchers to oust Brown following dire local and European election results, which saw the party's share of the vote fall to an unprecedented 15%, plus losing control of Wales for the first time since 1918 and losing control of all of their remaining six county councils.
