Has resided in a Motion Picture & Television Fund long-term nursing home since suffering a massive stroke in 2004.

Suffered a massive stroke before filming the mystery thriller The Ninth Gate (1999).

His stocky build and nervous, jumpy mannerisms fit well with the weaselly criminals, lecherous villains and corrupt businessmen and politicians he excels in playing - a perfect example of which is the Beverly Hills police chief in 1987's Beverly Hills Cop II (1987). Midway through his career he reverted to his real name of Allan Goorwitz, but not long afterwards decided to stay with his stage name, and went back to Allen Garfield.

His only lead role was in the sports drama Skateboard (1978), although most people went to see the movie because of his teenage co-star Leif Garrett.

He passed away on the same day of Francis Ford Coppola's 81st birthday. They both collaborated in The Conversation (1974), One from the Heart (1981) and The Cotton Club (1984).

New Jersey-born Allen Garfield was trained at the Actors Studio in New York City. He had a prolific career on the stage before making his film debut in 1968.

He made guest appearances on both of the longest running prime time dramas in US television history: Gunsmoke (1955) and Law & Order (1990).
