His first feature film, "Desolation Angels" (1997), won the International Critics Prize (FIPRESCI) at the Toronto Film Festival and the Merchant Ivory/Kodak Award at the Telluride Film Festival, and was Critic's Choice at the Rotterdam International Film Festival. Directors Jonathan Demme and Barbet Schroeder presented the film during a limited theatrical release, where it landed on several "best films of the year" lists (Village Voice, Chicago Reader, etc. ).
