1935

He was strongly anti-war and following Benito Mussolini's invasion of Abyssinia in 1935 declared that he would rather abdicate than lead Britain through another world war.

1931

Although as Prince of Wales he had struggled to conceal his contempt for socialism and the Liberal party, as King George V he kept his views hidden in accordance with his position as a constitutional monarch. His closest relationship with a politician was with his Labour Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. The King was instrumental in persuading MacDonald to lead a coalition government during the financial crisis of 1931.

1924

In 1924 George V fell ill with bronchitis and influenza, and took a cruise on his yacht to recover. In 1928 he fell seriously ill with septicemia and a blood infection, and his son the Prince of Wales ruled for the next two years as regent in all but name. The King's recovery was slow, particularly since he was allowed to resume smoking just four days after he was brought to hospital by ambulance. Even after he resumed public duties in 1930, he was never to be the same again. In the years leading up to his death he suffered from many ailments including pleurisy, chronic obstructive lung disease, bronchitis and emphysema.

In 1917, in the most questionable intervention of his reign, he personally forced David Lloyd George to withdraw his offer of asylum to Tsar Nicholas II and his family.

On 2 August 1914 he pressed the government to declare war on Germany, telling the Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey they needed to find an excuse for Britain to enter the conflict before Germany crushed France.
