On December 19, 2017 Carlin replaced longtime sports radio host, Mike Francesa, on the afternoon drive on WFAN 660 in New York City. He was joined with Maggie Gray and Bart Scott to form the afternoon team. Carlin and Scott began hosting on December 18, 2017, the Monday after Francesa's last show. On September 11, 2019 Carlin announced that he would be leaving WFAN after his show that day. On December 17, 2019, Carlin announced he would be joining 98.7 ESPN New York to host "Carlin at Night," weekdays from 7:00-10:00 PM.

While at SNY, Carlin co-hosted Loud Mouths, a sports debate program similar to that of ESPN's Pardon the Interruption, from its inception on March 24, 2008 until his departure from the network. Also, he and on-air partner Bob Ojeda co-hosted pre- and post-game telecasts for New York Mets games on SNY for five seasons, from 2009–2013. He also hosted SportsNite, SNY's nightly sports recap program.

Carlin is also the play-by-play voice for Rutgers football games, and from 2008–2016 he called Rutgers Men's Basketball games. He began at Rutgers as a sideline reporter for football in 2001, and took over the play-by-play duties at Rutgers in 2004 when Tom McCarthy, the TV voice of the Philadelphia Phillies, departed Rutgers.

He grew up in Chatham Township, New Jersey. After graduating Oratory Preparatory School in Summit, New Jersey, he went on to major in English in college, graduating from Hobart College in 1995. He started his career at WEOS FM in Geneva, New York, broadcasting sports of his alma mater, Hobart & William Smith Colleges. He called Football, Men's & Women's Basketball, Men's & Women's Lacrosse, Soccer, and Minor League Baseball. He was the station's sports director and also hosted a sports talk show briefly.

Carlin spent the first 13 years of his professional career at WFAN in New York. Beginning as an intern in 1995, he worked his way up to the position of producer for the Mike & The Mad Dog Show, co-hosted by Mike Francesa and Chris 'Mad Dog' Russo. Carlin produced the show for ​6  ⁄2 years, during which time his on-air role grew with the station. He briefly hosted overnights, and served as sports anchor on the Imus in the Morning program (2005–2007) & Boomer & Carton program (2007–2008.) In addition, he hosted The Morning Warmup, a one-hour pre-show for Boomer & Carton.

He formerly broadcast Minor League Baseball for the Geneva (1993) & Williamsport (1994–95) Cubs – currently known as the Williamsport Crosscutters. He also called college football games for Bucknell University and did both radio studio hosting and preseason play-by-play for the New York Giants radio and television (for pre-season) broadcasts for several years. Carlin has also worked on broadcasts of men's lacrosse for the NCAA and the now-defunct NFL Europa on the NFL Network.

Previously, Carlin was the co-host of Carlin & Reese on local Philadelphia sports radio station 94.1 WIP. Carlin joined the station in November 2016, after over 8 years on SportsNet New York, the New York Mets television network. He was the co-host of "CMB," with Bart Scott & Maggie Gray on WFAN in New York from 2018-19. Recently, he joined 98.7 ESPN Radio in New York, where he hosts "Carlin at Night," daily from 7:00 - 10:00 PM.
