In 2010, Alex was awarded the 1st Place Maverick Award at the 20th annual Cinequest Film Festival for his screenplay Baron of Havana (2010), which was chosen from over 900 entries, and ten finalists.

His thesis film, which he wrote and produced, Auteur (2006), won three awards and competed in over 20 international film festivals.

Alex served as Editor-In-Chief of "Venice Magazine", Los Angeles' premiere arts and entertainment publication, from 2000-2007.
